Our Story

Back in the 1990’s when our founder, Scott Rosen, was an equities analyst himself, sell-side analysts had a significant informational advantage over their clients. Before Reg FD and tighter regulation of access to non-public information, and before the rise of the Internet and the democratization of access to public data, brokerage analysts could leverage their privileged position in the market to provide significant value to investors without having to show their work.

While research is just as critical to the investment process today, that arbitrage opportunity has been dramatically reduced. As a result, investors demand far more detailed and comparable analysis from their research providers, requiring that they demonstrate their value in transparent and measurable ways.

As Entrepreneur in Residence of TheMarkets.com, a consortium of the world’s most prominent investment banks, Scott worked with the leadership of the banks’ respective research departments to develop solutions to increase the value proposition of their individual and collective content.

Identifying investors’ desire for deep quantification of the insights of the sell-side analyst community, the focus turned to the spreadsheet models that analysts create as the core distillation of their analysis of a company.

When TheMarkets.com sold to Capital IQ, Scott and our initial partner banks spun the project out on its own in 2011 to build a platform to aggregate and make sense of those sell-side models. Incorporated as Visible Alpha in 2015 and launched commercially in 2017, Visible Alpha has grown to include other solutions to challenges in investment research.

Visible Alpha was acquired by S&P Global on May 1, 2024. We have been incredibly fortunate to build a product that is increasingly viewed as the standard for equity fundamentals and forecast data in capital markets. S&P Global’s vast resources and scale will allow Visible Alpha to expand our offering at an accelerated pace. We will continue to strive to advance the investment research process by helping market participants improve collaboration by surfacing meaningful value from key sell-side assets.
